FEH Mountain Man Competition 2003

The Competition:

After an article was posted in the FEH office from The Lantern talking about how a journalist had translated Santa Maria as Big Ass Boat for some reason or another, we noticed that an article next to it talked about a "Mountain Man" competition at The University of West Virginia. After weeks of bragging about our own masculine follicle-growing abilities, we put our manhood to the test. For six weeks, there was to be no shaving or trimming of the facial area. The end of the competition coincided with a planned visit by the fiance of one of the competitors. To prove that the competition wasn't entirely sexist, we offered to let any women join the competition by not shaving their legs. However, there were no takers.... at least no takers that let me take their picture.

The Competitors:

James Beams

Vital Stats: Lasted two weeks. Having a girlfriend who visited him regularly was his downfall.

James Copus

Vital Stats: Red Beard? Whatever. Note that he actually trimmed a bit for a job interview when this picture was taken.

Aaron Lambert

Vital Stats: Handicapped by having the lightest beard color, he was no match for his darker-furred counterparts. Besides, he looks high all the time.

Ted Pavlic

Vital Stats: Ted was a fierce competitor, having a beard that makes him look like Alf. If Alf wore a beard. Or something.

Jeff Radigan

Vital Stats: Jeff's beard spawned a whole category in the competition: Beard Most Likely To Attack Random Passersby. Because it did.

Raj Taneja

Vital Stats: Raj did some pre-picture primping to puff his beard out more. He doesn't usually look that much like a chipmunk. He lasted so long in the competition because his fiance was hundreds of miles away. Ignorance is bliss.

The Results:
Mountain Man: Raj Taneja

Not too pretty, not too scary. A sassy combination of fur and style.

The Merchandising:

Later on that quarter, our students were a little slow in coming up with ideas for a T-Shirt as part of their Spring robot competition. Here was my idea for a T-Shirt if they couldn't come up with one:

In a similar vein, here was an idea for an award T-Shirt:
