Volleyballs for All

My friend Jay is raising money to donate sports equipment and supplies for two rural schools in India. Go here to donate. The nice thing about this is that ALL the proceeds donated will go towards the schools' equipment. The bad thing is that donating will help Jay successfully achieve yet another step in his plan for world domination.

Don't Mess with ....

So, I was recently in Texas on a business trip. I found out that I was staying in a dry county, and to get served alcohol, I would need to present my Unicard. To those of you who, like me, live in the 21st century and do not know what a Unicard is, let me enlighten you.

The Unicard is a way for individuals to fast-lane their membership into "private clubs" (which are allowed to serve alcohol) by providing a universally recognized ID which said "private clubs" accept.

It is strange to me that Texas would have dry counties. However, given the fact of dry counties: I am not surprised that Texans would find a way around the laws in order to drink.

By the way, the "private club" I was at was Applebees. Ugh.

Puzzling

The new water heater was installed today. I thought the original heater was installed in 1995, which would put it at about the right age to need to be replaced, anyway. After tearing off some of the insulation, I realized the heater was installed in 1989... definitely due. The internal foam insulation on the water heater was completely soaked with water, and sloshed around as it was carried out... after the tank itself was drained. Oh, well. More unforeseen expenses....

My basement was slightly wet, but my living room is buried under puzzle pieces:

Must... Eat....Brains

Yeah, yet another license plate idea.

Tiger Meat Is Tasty

My current license plates are looking kind of beat up, and it's about time to renew. I am thinking of getting some vanity plates. Here is my first idea:

Too subtle? Not subtle enough?

Random thoughts...

I have a leaking water heater. Choices: fix it myself, or call the service phone number on the water heater? Whichever I choose, we're taking a shower BEFORE we do anything.

For some reason, while watching the Olympics opening ceremony last night I really wanted Bush to try to cement his legacy by giving a speech in front of the Great Wall of China where he says, "Mr. Hu Jintao, TEAR DOWN THIS WALL!"

Billboard Hypnosis

I pass an electronic billboard on my way to work every morning. It's quite distracting, actually. Lately, there has been this ad that just says one thing: www.stoppowley.com. Ok, interesting. Apparently illegal gambling makes enough money in Akron that they can advertise against the local prosecutor. My favorite line on the site is: Citizens are not able to purchase economical long distance phone service. Hmm... what does that mean? A little research results in this fascinating article on shady gaming operations in the area. I guess one of the ways to get into the "sweepstakes" is to purchase a 1-minute calling card for 69 cents. Economical long distance service, indeed.

Switchover In Progress!

I'm slowly updating my website to the 20th century. No more horse-drawn blog posts! More stuff shortly.
